The first documentation of an African-American settler in Mecosta County Michigan was James Guy, who on May 30, 1861, obtained 160 acres in Wheatland Township. By 1873 African-Americans owned about 1,392 acres. The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed each settler 160 acres in Rolland Township. Most of the land where Remus sits at that time was owned by African-Americans.

Should the Old Settlers' Reunion Website be Deleted?

Here is what the family has to say.....

Reviewer: Phylis Mack - A Lett relative from Zanesville, OH writes:

Thanks for posting the information about Copyright Laws, and for standing up for the Old Settlers' Website. The information that you post from the families is very important to us. We need access to this information, I have learned to appreciate my family connections because of it. It is a valuable resource for all of us. Thank you.

Reviewer: Joanne Mumford - My husband Wayne Mumford asked that I write and let you know how very much he appreciates your "Old Settler" information site. Wayne and I had planned to attend the picnic last month but unexpected surgery (and hurricanes) we couldn't make the drive. Hopefully, if everything is okay next year we will see you then. Please let everyone know the web site is fantastic and we really utilize it. Wayne & Joanne Mumford

Reviewer: Robert Lett - I'm just feeling a bit sentimental and wanted to share a few thoughts with you. I cannot express how much it means to me having made contact with my large Michigan family. While I have been aware of my Lett connected family of Ohio, somehow having connected with the Michigan family has made my life more complete.

Of course to my Lett surname family I'm obligated to say you are "the best" but in truth the many friendships I have made through e-mail and telephone conversations; with those of the; Berry, Cross, Green, Guy, Norman, Pointer, Sleet, Stewart, Todd surnames have been outstanding. While each family has its own unique story to tell it is the common story of our interlinking of families which is so incredibly dynamic.

When you view the tragedy unfolding in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, and you see the widespread devastation it makes me so grateful and appreciative of all that we have.

The vehicle and tool for communicating and teaching which has grown from the Old Settlers Reunion Books into a website continues to capture the imagination of all who happen onto the website. Further the spirit of your forefathers is conveyed in the brilliant manner in which Marsha has erected the website and continually upgrades its contents. It is truly amazing how many people are drawn to "come home" and are "welcomed back" as a result of those who struggled to create the reunion books which became a source for the website.

I want to once again tell you how much I appreciate and love you. Further, what a pleasure it is being apart of your family too!

Hello fellow decendants. I am a part of the OSRA and have been following the recent postings concerning shutting down the site. I, and the OSRA, in no way wish this to occur. We fully underestand the importance of the website and encourage our families to visit the site regularly. I appreciate the passion behind Marsha's efforts and realize the work related to maintaining the site. We hope that the future will bring understanding and clear communication, until then, know that the Association was formed to move our great family forward in every aspect. We apologize for any harm done and hope to get more family involved in the OSRA.

Thank you Marsha and supporting staff for putting together a great site.

Hi Marsha and others,
I just want to say I love Marsha's website and her and her family. They have been so helpful and good to me. I began to learn of my heritage less than 2 years ago. They and many others have made me feel so welcome and a part of the family. I am proud to be a descendent of our amazing Old Settlers. I think your site is wonderful and I'm glad to see you are now getting the backing of the OSRA.
Hopefully we will all continue to learn more and more of our heritage together and continue welcoming the other new cousins we find on this great trip into our past.
Marsha, you are a special person. Keep up the good work. Love to you, Barb Nelson

Hello: Yes, I would publish the book. I really believe that ancestors sometimes sway their kin people in certain directions. I know that when Judy Jackson-Caldwell brought her mother's picture scrapbooks to me and said, "Maybe you can do something with these because I can't," I knew that Margueritte wanted me to do something with the pictures. The scrapbooks contained the History of Isabella and Mecosta Counties in picture form. That is when I decided to start this website. A voice kept saying, "You have to do something with those pictures." So if you feel that driving force to publish her story, DO IT!!!

I can still remember the joy I felt when I first discovered the Old Settlers' Reunion website. Every family member should have that initial thrill of discovery. To abandon this site is tantamount to abandoning our history. That happened once before to us as a people. We should never allow it to happen again!
OldSettlersReunion.com is a place where all of our families are free to come and celebrate their oneness.
Marsha has given us a precious gift that should be treasured. Let's show our gratitude by keeping it alive and prospering.

I hope that the Old Settlers' Reunion website doesn't get deleted. I was doing some web surfing to find out about my family (Flowers) and there history. I ran across this website and found alot of information that I never new about my families history. I added it to my favorites so I wouldn't lose this websit.

I think it would be tragic to delete the site. Many of us who have migrated away from Michigan look for the connections and ties that bind family members. The old settler's site is the only comprehensive place that gives me the historical reference to my family there. Furthermore, the children need to know their ancestors - and with the pictures you get to see the intergenerational progression of the family - let it continue to conntect with the rich history of our family.

This site is a true blessing and would be a great tragedy if it was removed. I hope that we all stand strong to keep our family history our ancestor’s heroic events alive. They fought hard to make a great foundation and now it is up to descendents to keeping it alive. Thank you Marsha for your wonderful talent and professional work on this site, and much appreciation to everyone else who has contributed all additional documentation in keeping our family history alive.
I plan on purchasing the volume 1 & 2 , so that my children understands how hard their ancestors struggled to get us to where we are today.
Sorry, I had a bit of a problem getting this posting to take.

One factor that has tremendously hiked up the number of researches going into the male sexual dysfunction disease, erectile dysfunction, is definitely the ED drugs like cialis.Definitely every man dreads the prospect of falling back on medicines, no matter how much good they have done or how effective they are. One way of possibly staying away from ED is to have sex atleast thrice a week. This exercise can be phenomenal in cutting down the risks of ED to half.

My hope is that the Old Settlers' Reunion website will be around for awhile to come. This website is a great site that I frequent often and refer to. The site is a great example of our background and strength and should be shared. I often am asked why I decided to do what I do. The website helps to explain that my determination my desires comes from those from past present and future. We have a long lineage and it is something that will continue to grow as we grow. The website is a signal of growth and for those of us avid online searchers and entreprenuers it is a beacon of hope. Alot of who we are has been shared through the generations and as my belief should continue.

I just came across this site today, which is the day of the 77th Old Settler's Reunion. There are two or three other related sites, so it was a lucky coincidence that I found this one.

I was puzzled about the post concerning copyright issues. I would have liked to have seen what the comments and concerns were since from my own experience with copyrights, I can tell you that unless someone publishes a book with their version of our respective stories using family photographs, there are no copyright issues. Our story is in the Public Domain, free to be told by anyone who wishes to tell it. In my case, I produced a three part video telling the interrelated stories of The Little River School, The School Section Lake Story, and A Nation Within Itself. This work was copyrighted due to its unique presentation of the material contained in the previously published books, which contained vintage photographs that were donated unconditionally for the general purpose of documenta-tion.

While the OSRA in the past published the two books on Mecosta Settlers and A NATION WITHIN ITSELF, they were self-published "vanity press" publications that were not submitted for copyright registration. However, the book, FORBIDDEN FRUIT, by Betty DeRamos used some of our stories with the cooperation of some of our relatives. But this was Miss DeRamos' telling of the stories, which were copyrighted in her name. This does not imply that she owns any exclusivity to our stories. We have priority to that history and that supersedes any copyrights by this or any other author who wishes to publish articles or books about our unique history.
